Why a Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry (and When It Is a Fire Risk)

If your dryer requires two or three 60-minute cycles to dry normal bath towels, your dryer is sending an urgent warning sign.

The primary cause is restricted exhaust airflow. When lint builds up in the interior exhaust ductwork or the exterior vent hood damper is stuck shut, moist air cannot escape. The dryer cabinet overheats, repeatedly tripping the cycling thermostat and high-limit safety cutoff.

Signs of an immediate fire danger: - The top or sides of the dryer feel burning hot to the touch. - You smell a sweet, burning, or scorched odor when the drum spins. - The exterior vent flap on your home's siding does not open when the dryer runs. - Clothes come out smelling musty and humid rather than fresh.

Have your dryer inspected, internal lint chambers vacuumed, and exhaust duct checked immediately.
