Why Is My Freezer Frosting Up? Causes and Fixes

Frost buildup in a frost-free freezer indicates humid air is leaking inside or the automatic defrost cycle has failed.

Common triggers include: - Worn Magnetic Door Gaskets: Cracks or tears in the rubber seal allow warm, moisture-laden room air to be drawn into the sub-zero compartment, immediately freezing into snow-like frost. - Failed Defrost Heater: Self-defrosting freezers turn on a heating rod beneath the coils every 8-12 hours. If this element burns out, ice chokes the coils. - Defrost Termination Thermostat: This safety switch senses coil temperature. If it fails open, the heater never receives power. - Blocked Defrost Drain: When melt water cannot drain out of the freezer floor during defrost, it pools, freezes, and creates a solid ice sheet under your lower basket.

If simple manual defrosting doesn't fix the issue within a few days, call our technicians for a comprehensive defrost circuit test.
